Gene by Gene, through its division Family Tree DNA was the first company in the world to develop DNA testing for ancestry and genealogical purposes as a commercial application. Prior to the company’s initiative, these tests were only available for academic and research purposes. Because of this innovation, it was selected by the National Geographic Society and its partner, IBM, to provide the testing and manage all public participation in the Genographic Project. Initially, the Arizona Research Labs at The University of Arizona performed all testing. In 2006, Gene by Gene established a state-of-the-art Genomics Research Center at its headquarters in Houston, Texas, where it currently performs R&D and processes over 200 types of DNA tests for its customers, ranging from individuals to physicians, hospitals, universities and research institutions.
