What is EAP?

EAP is a work-based intervention program that helps employees resolve personal and work-related problems affecting their job performance, health, and well-being. EAPs typically offer confidential and cost-free evaluations, short-term counseling, referrals, and continuous care by follow-up services for employees.


What does EAP stand for?

EAP stands for Employee Assistance Program. As the name suggests, it is a company-provided benefit program designed to assist employees facing issues that can negatively affect their well-being and job performance.


What is an EAP Program?

An Employee Assistance Program (EAP) is an intervention program designed to provide access to licensed counselors who can help employees cope with various issues, including problems outside of the workplace and work-related stress. These programs have traditionally focused on issues like substance abuse but now cover multiple topics, including wellness, legal concerns, and traumatic events. EAPs can be offered through stand-alone vendors or as part of a comprehensive health insurance plan and are usually provided at no cost to employees.


What are EAP Benefits?

Employee Assistance Programs (EAPs) offer a range of benefits that depend on the type of EAP. The first type of EAP offers problem-focused, session-limited counseling for employees and their families. The other type, also known as broad brush EAPs, provides services like information and referral, management consultation, crisis response, training, education, and problem-focused counseling for employees and their families.


How does EAP work?

Employees can access the EAP program through self-referral or supervisory referral, which offers confidential counseling and access to resources such as legal firms, childcare professionals, elder care specialists, and more. The range of services EAP provides can vary depending on the plan but typically includes short-term, problem-solving counseling for various issues. While not a substitute for health insurance, combining an EAP with a health plan can provide additional employee support. With an EAP, employees and their qualified household members can access a confidential resource they can call when crises or general life management questions arise, helping maintain a healthy work culture and increased productivity.


Is EAP Confidential?

Yes, Employee Assistance Program (EAP) services are confidential. However, there are exceptions to confidentiality, such as court orders, threats of harm to oneself or others, or cases of abuse or neglect. In supervisory referrals, the employee is only required to sign a release confirming attendance. Personal information shared between the EAP practitioner and employee remains confidential and is not shared with the supervisor.


How does an EAP benefit your Workplace?

An array of benefits is provided by EAPs, which includes medical benefits such as direct counseling and treatment, preventive care, and emergency consultation. As a result, EAPs benefit the workplace in many ways, including reducing absenteeism, increasing productivity, and lowering employee turnover, according to SHRM. Studies indicate that for every dollar an employer spends on an EAP, they can save anywhere from $5.00 to $16.00. Moreover, EAP counselors can guide managers in managing complex employee situations, and EAP services can help prevent performance issues. By offering EAPs, employers can meet employees' needs while remaining competitive for top talent and retaining valued staff.
