The topic of our last week’s webinar was employee mental health engagement reimagined. We all agree that mental health has become a vital conversation in today’s workplace. Organizations are making significant investments in wellness programs and digital health tools. Despite these efforts, the reality is that employees often do not take advantage of the resources available to them.

Research shows that while a majority of employees struggle with mental health challenges, only a fraction engage with employer-sponsored benefits. Why is that, and more importantly, what can be done about it?

We were joined by Bob Baker, VP of Consultant Relations, and Brian Oss, VP of Solution Consulting and Partnerships at Calm Health, who provided an in-depth overview of how Calm Health supports a wide range of mental health needs. They explained how clinically validated screenings power personalized recommendations that engage employees in their mental and physical health and help guide them to relevant employer-sponsored resources.

About Calm Health

Founded in 2012, Calm is the #1 app for meditation and sleep, with more than 180 million downloads. Many people first discovered Calm through Sleep Stories narrated by voices like Matthew McConaughey and Harry Styles, but over the past decade, Calm has become a trusted daily resource for mental wellness. In fact, Calm was recently named one of Newsweek’s Most Trusted U.S. Brands for 2026, ranking #1 in the meditation category based on an independent survey of more than 35,000 consumers.

Building on Calm’s trusted reputation, Calm Health offers a configurable digital mental health solution for employers and health plans. Developed by psychologists, it provides evidence-based programs for stress, anxiety, depression, chronic conditions, and more, guiding users to the right support through personalized recommendations informed by clinically validated screenings and self reported goals. Calm Health is HIPAA- and HITRUST-compliant and supports 39 million eligible members worldwide, with localized support in ten languages.

The Engagement Problem in Employee Mental Health

The Engagement Problem in Employee Mental Health

Companies invest in employee benefits, assuming employees will engage and that will automatically lead to healthier employees. The reality shows that access alone does not guarantee participation. Employees often feel overwhelmed by too many options.

Traditional programs may be designed with good intentions, but fail to meet employees where they are emotionally. Some employees may need light daily support, such as stress management or sleep improvement, while others require structured clinical care.

This is why modern mental health strategies are shifting away from isolated solutions and toward engagement-focused ecosystems that make mental wellness accessible, personalized, and easy to use.

A New Approach: Engagement-Driven Mental Wellness Platforms

Newer mental wellness platforms are evolving. They combine multiple levels of support from mindfulness and daily wellness practices to clinical programs and behavioral health support into one cohesive experience.

Calm Health is different in that it is built for engagement and drives impact in three ways:

  1. Engagement within the Calm Health app
A simple, personalized approach guides users to the right mix of clinical programs and mindfulness resources, delivering ongoing, relevant support at every stage of their journey.
  2. Engagement across the benefits ecosystem
Calm Health connects employees to employer- or health plan-sponsored benefits, such as EAPs, coaching, and condition management programs, helping boost utilization and optimize investment.
  3. Organizational impact
Calm Health supports mental health outcomes by addressing challenges tied to medical conditions, life experiences, and occupational challenges. By promoting early intervention, it can potentially help lower medical costs and strengthen employee well-being.

Getting started is easy. Employees complete a clinically validated mental health screening at enrollment.  Based on their results, as well as their self-reported goals and topics of interest, they receive tailored recommendations for Calm Health content, programs, and resources, as well as employer or health plan sponsored coaching, clinical programs, or therapy, depending on their level of need. Continuous follow-ups and adaptive recommendations help maintain progress over time.

This structured yet flexible approach removes the burden from employees to figure out their own pathway while ensuring that support evolves with their changing needs.

Mental Health Spectrum

Meeting Employees Across the Mental Health Spectrum

One of the most impactful changes in modern mental health strategies is recognizing that employee needs exist on a spectrum. While one individual is looking to improve focus or sleep, others may experience mild stress or burnout. And there are employees who require immediate clinical intervention or crisis support.

Calm’s engagement-driven platform offers multiple layers of support within a single ecosystem, including:

  • Mindfulness and meditation
  • Sleep Stories, music, and movement programs
  • Clinical programs designed to support anxiety, depression, trauma, or chronic conditions
  • Resources for unique life and work experiences
  • Integration with employer-sponsored benefits, helping to guide employees to EAPs, therapists, or chronic condition management programs

With this approach, which addresses both preventive and clinical needs, organizations can support employees earlier in their mental health journey, before challenges escalate into more serious issues.

Integration with the Benefits Ecosystem

Another major barrier to engagement is fragmentation. Employees often need to navigate multiple platforms, logins, and vendors.

As an integrated mental health solution, Calm Health removes that friction. Within a single, connected ecosystem, employees receive personalized guidance that directs them to the most relevant programs and services.

For employers, this integrated approach improves visibility into employee needs and engagement trends and helps maximize the value of existing benefits.

Measuring Impact Through Data and Insights

Employers are increasingly demanding measurable outcomes from their mental health investments. Calm’s engagement-driven platform provides analytics that help organizations understand how employees interact with resources and where additional support may be needed.

Key insights often include:

  • Participation rates in screenings and programs
  • Improvement in emotional wellbeing over time
  • Trends in workforce mental health needs
  • Data-driven recommendations for benefits strategy adjustments

With access to ongoing analytics and strategic reviews, organizations can make informed decisions about their wellness initiatives instead of relying on assumptions or limited feedback.

Creating a Culture That Supports Mental Wellness

Technology alone cannot solve workplace mental health challenges. Successful programs are supported by a broader culture that encourages openness, psychological safety, and proactive self-care.

Employers can strengthen engagement by promoting mental health resources consistently through internal communications. Managers can learn how to recognize signs of burnout or distress. Well-being should be something we can talk about openly. Leadership should encourage a model of healthy behaviors.

When employees feel safe discussing mental health and know where to turn for support, engagement naturally increases.
