Chamilo is a free and open-source e-learning and collaboration platform (Learning Management System) originally forked in January 2010 from an earlier free-software LMS project (itself descended from Claroline, 2001) to protect its open, community-governed character. It is coordinated by the Chamilo Association, an international non-profit founded in Belgium in 2010 and headquartered in Spain since 2014. The software is GDPR-compliant, certified as a Digital Public Good by the UN-backed Digital Public Goods Alliance, and used by an estimated tens of millions of learners worldwide, including universities, public administrations, hospitals, and private companies. Because it is open source and nonprofit-governed, Chamilo does not follow a typical venture-funded SaaS business model; implementation, hosting, and support services are provided by third-party partners such as BeezNest.
