Carrot Inc.

Carrot Inc. is a digital health company focused on helping people quit smoking. Our Pivot program uses an FDA-cleared mobile breath sensor, consumer-grade mobile app, evidence-based quit strategies, behavioral science, and personal coaching to create a new type of experience for smokers. The company was founded by a former Stanford cancer surgeon and is staffed by global leaders in behavioral science, tobacco cessation, medical devices, and consumer product design. Main investors include Khosla Ventures and Salesforce founder Marc Benioff.

Value Proposition

Pivot is a B2B2C product—a wellness benefit delivered by medium and large employers to their employees who smoke. Currently, about 85 percent of such companies offer some sort of tobacco cessation benefit. Yet, those programs enroll only 7 percent of employees who smoke, on average—even though 70 percent of smokers say they want to quit and roughly half try to quit in any given year. The help on offer is so unremarkable that even when it’s offered for free, people who are trying to quit choose to ignore it.
We’re trying to turn quitting into something people get to do, instead of something they have to do. From marketing to app design to our mobile sensors to our coaching methodology, everything has been created with the goal of approaching tobacco cessation as a consumer experience, instead of a clinical one.
The result: Within weeks, our clients are seeing enrollment rates three to four times as high as current quit programs average in a full year. And, quite simply, more smokers in means more non-smokers out.
Given that each smoker costs their employer an extra ,000 per year in excess healthcare expenses and lost productivity, that’s important.
