  • Poor medical consumerism

3 big mistakes employers are doing with population health management strategies

There are many aspects of population health management (PHM) but at its foundation is early detection, prevention and enhancing wellbeing.

In our webinar, Stephen discussed the three major mistakes employers often make in their approach to Population Health Management (PHM) and provided strategies for course correction to save both money and lives.

MISTAKE #1 – Not prioritizing preventive health screenings

  • There’s a greater need for preventative health screenings than ever before.
  • Preventative health screenings are the best solution for early detection and awareness.
  • There’s a great cost to individuals and employers for not practicing prevention as healthcare costs continue to rise.

MISTAKE #2 – Using the wrong strategies for compliance

• Employer groups mistakenly lean on health care systems for certain preventative health screenings and it is costly to both employer group and the system as a whole.
• The U.S. healthcare system (going to the doctor) is not set up or positioned to support regular preventative health screenings especially as there is an increasing family practice doctor shortage in U.S.
• There is a huge savings opportunity to use on-site screenings as the first step in awareness and early detection before the need to engage a primary care physician.

MISTAKE #3 – Not tracking or leveraging health data

  • Self-funded groups benefit by knowing and tracking the health and risks of the organization.
  • Individuals also benefit by knowing and tracking their individual health markers and risks.
  • Groups can make better health benefit decisions when they have more data and can avoid surprises.

What employers need to do?

  1. Leadership support
  2. Be committed to awareness, early detection, and education
  3. Incentivize members to complete on-site preventative screenings and private consultations
  4. Provide the right tools and support for behavior change
  5. Identify and track group risks for better health benefit design and offerings
  6. Track data and verify return and value (ROI/VOI)
