The main problem with MSDs is not the pain or loss function, but how these disorders are handled or really mishandled. The direct cost of MSDs has reached $20 billion per year in the United States. They affect more than 1.7 billion people worldwide, and are the second leading cause of disability.
Research has found that seeing a physical therapist first for musculoskeletal disorders reduces: ER visits, opioid prescriptions, unnecessary imaging, and overall costs. But, our current healthcare system has this backwards. Instead, those suffering in pain wait to see their primary physician and only 25% go on to finally see a MSD specialist.
This is where we want to transform healthcare….The musculoskeletal specialist must be the first line of defense in treating musculoskeletal problems. We have even gone a step further, insisting that all of our clinicians have received certification or diploma in Mechanical Diagnosis and Treatment (MDT).
