Alight Introduces a GLP-1 HRA, Benepass Brings Benefits Data into ChatGPT, and More Industry News

October's deals and launches show benefits and HR companies bring data in-house and connect the systems employers still manage separately.
In This Post:

Employers heading into 2027 renewals are managing GLP-1 drugs that reached 11.4% of annual claims in 2025, along with benefits data spread across disconnected systems.

The latest announcements tackle both, with a capped GLP-1 reimbursement account and AI assistants that can read an employee’s actual benefits balances, among many other exciting developments.

The employee benefits industry news below covers what each announcement means for employers and HR leaders.

Alight Launches a GLP-1 HRA and Acquires Abett

Alight made two announcements within two weeks, one giving employers a new way to fund weight-management drugs and the other adding the data infrastructure to track how benefits are used.

GLP-1 HRA Gives Employers a Fixed Budget

On October 13, Alight introduced a GLP-1 health reimbursement account that lets employers fund GLP-1 medications through a set contribution rather than open-ended plan coverage.

Employers define eligibility and set monthly or annual limits. The design can also run alongside an HSA-qualified high-deductible plan.

GLP-1s made up 42% of prescriptions reviewed through Alight’s healthcare navigation service, up from 32% in 2024.

"Employers are looking for practical ways to respond to growing demand for GLP-1 medications," said Karen Frost, senior vice president at Alight.

The HRA gives employers an option between full coverage and none. WEX launched a comparable HRA in March, so Alight joins a small group of administrators offering the model.

Abett Adds a Benefits Data Layer

On October 1, Alight acquired Abett, whose Data Engine brings medical, pharmacy, partner, and point-solution data into one place for Fortune 500 employers and their vendors.

Terms were not disclosed.

The deal gives Alight the infrastructure to see utilization across vendors, which could support capped benefits such as the GLP-1 HRA.

"Abett will help employers better connect their benefits ecosystem," said Alight CEO Rohit Verma.

Benepass Brings Benefits Account Data into ChatGPT and Claude

On October 13, Benepass launched an AI experience that gives employees and HR teams personalized benefits support inside Benepass and through AI tools such as ChatGPT and Claude.

The initial release covers lifestyle spending accounts, HRAs, FSAs, and commuter benefits. Employees can ask whether a purchase is covered and get help submitting the claim, while HR teams can query program and spending data and investigate transactions.

The connection runs through Benepass’s own Model Context Protocol server, which applies to each user’s existing permissions. Companies can also connect Benepass to their own AI benefits assistants.

"AI creates a new entryway into benefits data," said Mark Fischer, chief product officer and co-founder of Benepass.

Benepass, which describes the launch as industry-first, says its core AI integrations are live, with broader workspace connectivity rolling out through the rest of 2026.

TriNet Turns Cocoon Into an Embedded Leave Product

On October 13, TriNet announced TriNet Leave, a new leave management product for small and midsize businesses. It uses technology from Cocoon, which TriNet acquired earlier this year.

The product is rolling out in phases and brings leave requests and claims tracking into the TriNet platform, along with support for compliance obligations and return-to-work processes.

Two more products arrive in early January: TriNet Recruit, an applicant tracking tool powered by JazzHR, and TriNet Spend, which connects expense management with payroll reimbursements.

TriNet also added voice-enabled mobile features to TriNet Assistant and gave administrators the ability to ask questions about workforce data directly within Reports and Analytics.

Both enhancements are available now.

"Our customers don't think about HR in silos," said Lisa Reeves, chief product officer at TriNet.

Ascensus Launches a Workplace-to-Wealth Platform for 16 Million Savers

In retirement benefits, Ascensus launched a workplace-to-wealth platform on September 30. The offering connects savers with financial advisors during decisions, such as changing jobs or preparing for retirement.

Referral workflows link employees with the advisor serving their plan or a firm affiliated with an Ascensus partner. Partners determine which options are presented and how savers are served.

“We don’t compete with the advisors and institutions we serve,” said Dan Morrison, president of retirement at Ascensus.

Ascensus serves more than 16 million savers across its business, although the new platform is launching with select firms. The company expects to connect additional advisory firms and financial institutions in the coming months.

BambooHR and Employee Navigator Launch a Two-Way Payroll Integration

On October 1, BambooHR and Employee Navigator announced a two-way integration between their platforms. According to BambooHR, Employee Navigator is used by more than 200,000 companies and 7,000 brokers nationwide.

The integration automatically updates payroll deductions and employer contributions in BambooHR Payroll when employees enroll in benefits or change their coverage. Employee information, including new-hire records, also syncs from BambooHR to Employee Navigator.

“Benefits administration works best when it’s connected to the other systems brokers and employers rely on every day,” said George Reese, CEO of Employee Navigator.

The connection allows employers to keep their broker’s benefits administration arrangement while using BambooHR for HR and payroll. Updates can move between the systems without someone entering the same information twice.

Weight Watchers Adds Fitbit to Employer Weight Management Programs

On September 29, Weight Watchers announced a collaboration with Google Health Enterprise, available through select Weight Watchers for Business client programs.

Eligible employees can gain access to Google Fitbit Air after meeting requirements for activity and time in the program. Connecting the device to a Weight Watchers account brings activity and sleep information into the program experience.

Weight Watchers say the collaboration complements its GLP-1 Success Program and Med+ virtual clinic.

More Services Through Existing Benefits Relationships

October’s employee benefits industry news gave employers more to work with inside platforms they already use.

Benepass and BambooHR brought benefits data closer to the tools employees and payroll teams open every day, while TriNet folded leave management into its PEO offering.

Alight’s GLP-1 HRA stands out for a different reason, giving employers a fixed budget for one of the fastest-growing costs in their benefits programs.

For benefits teams heading into 2027 renewals, vendors now cover more ground than they did a month ago, giving buyers more to weigh when comparing options.
